Ma's Seattle Visit
Well it now seems obvious that I should have taken more photos while Ma was out in Seattle for Alison's wedding. Sorry for so few. I did however keep track of all the things we did. And boooooy, did we do a *lot*! Check it out:
- Visited the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room. Twice! Once we had the exclusive Reserve Roastery beans using the pour over method and once we experienced a decaf blend via the vacuum brew method (quite the show!).
- Ivar's. Twice! A famous Seattle seafood establishment. Ma mentioned she had more deep fried food during the week in Seattle than she has the past forty years combined. She sure loved Ivar's though. She had scallops once and the other time she had the classic Ivar fish and chips (cod). I did the salmon chowder and clam chowder. The restaurant is located on the water and we ate in a covered patio. There's uncovered outdoor seating and the terrific weather would have allowed for sitting there, but due to the plethora of SEAGULLS leaving DEPOSITS on you and your food, only tourists eat out there.
- Dinner at Danny and Marisa's. Twice! The food and company were both great. The first dinner had half the crowd on eastern time and everyone was a trooper staying up until midnight EST (9pm Pacific). Ma had a great time getting the tour from Danny.
- Gave Ma a tour of the three-story Quality Food Center that is our local grocery store.
- Lake Chelan for the wedding. The five of us (Kelsey, me, Ma, Danny and Charles Mangum - Marisa's father) stayed in a gorgeous house halfway between town and the winery that served as the wedding venue. We had some great Thai food, played yard games (I lost badly to Charles at blongo ball. I introduced Charles to it and he'd never played before. How embarrassing! :), ate breakfasts and dinners out on the patio. There was a sunset cruise on the lake the night before the wedding. The wedding itself at Atam Winery was gorgeous. Everyone (including Ma and Danny) surprised me with how much they danced.
- Hit up a local coffee shop called Voxx.
- Hit up a local donut shop that roasts and brews their own coffee (this *is* Seattle after all) called Top Pot. Their coffee is good. Their donuts.... eh. Ma and I split a blueberry fritter one of the visits that *was delicious*.
- Took the "Underground Tour". It was a 75 minute tour about the history of Seattle that takes place largely underneath the streets of downtown. There were over 70 people in the tour at 11am *on a Tuesday*. After the 15 minute introduction, we were split into two groups for the tour itself. Ma and I were put into the group that *wasn't* with the opener. We discreetly absconded from our designated group so as that we were able to stay with the varsity tour guide. He was awesome. I've never been on this tour and was blow away at how interesting it was. Ma got a senior discount! :)
- Ate at Marination. This is a Hawaiian fusion restaurant with a terrific view of the city across the water. I took Jason there when he was in town. Jason got the night view with Seattle lighting up. Ma got the day view with the water taxi coming across the sound as we ate.
- We split a salad and calzone at a restaurant called "Pazzo's". I don't know that it's famous or well known, but it should be. It was within walking distance of my apartment and the one order was so much food that even splitting it Ma couldn't finish her portion. As we both got water, our dinner was around $12 total.
- We went to Pike's place market. We saw 'em slinging the fish. We sampled some dried fruits. Liked one so much we got it. Boooooom beets! We stopped by the "world famous" crumpet shop. Turns out it might not be famous at all.
- Ma stayed at two airbnbs. That was quite the experience for her.
- Kelsey Ma and I had lots of socializing time in our 2 x 3.5 hour ride to and from Atam winery.
- Ma went vacation home shopping (you'll have to ask her about this one for the story! :)
- We went to the Hiram Chittenden Locks, Ballard Fish Ladder and botanical gardens. This may be my favorite place to visit in Seattle. We watched a 15 minute video about the history of the locks and got to see the lock in action live from start to finish. There were even salmon in the ladders though they weren't jumping through while we were there.
- Ma got to feed, hold, burp and change (woohoo :) her grand-nephew Seth.
The pictures below are
- a special place we found at the market and
- Ma at Ivar's the second time. Yum Ivar's!
I'm sure there's some things I'm leaving out but you get the idea that boy were we busy! Thanks for coming out Ma. We had a great visit. Love you.
