MEDINA — Jamie Moore has never looked at coaching swimming as a job. Far from it with her tending to two young children at home.
After spending the last two seasons as an assistant in the Medina swim program, the 31year-old felt it was the right time to take over for Kevin Rytel, despite expecting her third child in January.
“When (Medina athletic director) Jeff Harrison offered me the job, I didn’t know I was pregnant,” Moore said. “This year should be an adventure. I’m fortunate that I get to stay at home with my kids, so it all works out well. I have the best job of all.”
Despite having a full-time job at home as a parent to 3-year-old Abby and 16-month-old Aaron along with husband Mike, Moore is more than ready to lead the Bees.
The Medina resident brings a wealth of experience. As a prep, Moore was a standout swimmer for the always-strong Hawken program, winning a district championship individually in the 200-meter individual medley and helping the program to a state championship as a senior in 1997.
She went on to swim for the College of Wooster, competing in the 100 butterfly and 200 and 400 IMs, along with various relay events. Moore earned All-American status as a relay swimmer and graduated in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy.
“I feel everything I learned from swimming helped shape me as an individual,” she said. “That’s my goal for Medina. If we swim fast, that’s a bonus, but it’s about life lessons.”
Moore knows a thing or two about shaping young swimmers after coaching stints with the Firestone Aquatic Team, as an assistant at Cleveland State University and a summer at Richard Quick’s prestigious Stanford Swim Camp in 2001.
Moore also spent this summer as a coach for the Medina Makos — a program that runs out of the Medina Community Recreation Center — and got a chance to work with some of her future swimmers as Medina’s boys and girls varsity teams attempt to improve on fourth place finishes in the Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division.
“Our kids have a good work ethic,” Moore said. “Like any other program at Medina, we were hit by the pay-to-play, but it’s been a positive because we have the kids that want to be there and they’ve worked hard. It means a little more to them and they appreciate it.”Way to go Chaim!! We're Proud of you!!
